Terminology

Colonoscopy – visual examination of the colon (with a colonoscope) from the cecum to the rectum; requires sedation.

EGD – esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract up to the duodenum.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy – visual examination (with a sigmoidoscope) of the lower third of the colon in a search for polyps.

Smart Pill – ingestible, capsule-based medical devices that aid in the diagnosis, definition and therapeutic intervention of gastrointestinal disorders and diseases.

Capsule Endoscopy – a miniature capsule used to record images through the digestive tract for use in medicine.

Halo – ablation technology designed to remove the Barrett’s epithelium.

Liver Biopsy – medical procedure performed to obtain a small piece of liver tissue for diagnostic testing.

EUS – Endoscopic ultrasound – a procedure that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain images and information about the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs.
